"Scientists believe they have captured the elusive "God particle" that gives matter mass and holds the physical fabric of the universe together."

What does this mean, that space isn't space but is a physical thing?
If it is physical then that means that it can be opened or stretched right? So what happens if we actually tear apart these particles, what lies behind space? More space? Alternate realities? Different dimensions?

Will this open up any possibilities for wormholes or time travel if they exist?

No none of that

What it means is that the most popular theory of matter is probably correct.
Not a good day for religion :0) Mind you, they just wont believe it!
ok they have discovered a Higgs like particle that has a mass of 125.3 GEV, what I don't get is if the higgs is the mass boson what gives the boson it's mass?
my new nigerian friend has 14 of these particles for sale
Dr Filth, I know that Nigerian as well, He is actually going to pay £500.000 into my account to look after just one particle.
was that before or after he put a particle up his nose
Good question moonrocker

It gives other particles mass as they interact with it, But Higgs particles would interact with each other too.
for sale 14 and a half genuine imitation bosun particles @ grand each

I do wish people would stop referring to it as the God particle. Such a term is inane.

It won't open up any possibilities of anything nor will it change anything about reality. It simply reinforces the Standard Model which predicted their existence.

There are no free Higgs Bosons in our normal experience. They can only be generated by high energy collisions like those in the LHC.

Space can be stretched. Einstein showed that a century ago. It happens in very predictable ways but doesn't rip open to reveal anything behind it.
Yes it was Leon Lederman who first called it that.

He later said it was a great mistake

After he'd sold thusands of books called "The God Particle"
I don't understand the animosity to the God Particle name. It'd be a dull world if we didn't lighten up occasionally.
Because it implies that genuine physics is linked to some imaginary being maybe?
it was Stephen Hawking who wrote about knowing the mind of God. I believe he later decided it was a mistake too. As if the world had failed to understand what he meant.
Doesn't it just :-) That's why it's fun and makes life that bit better.
Yes - and Einstein "God doesn't play dice"

Sometimes it seems that Physicists can't keep away from the G word
And a lot of believers don't understand irony.
Thank God im an Atheist!!!
I know what irony is -

it's like goldy and bronzy only it's made out of iron.
Er, this God particle thingy,.....was it found on a overdone piece of toast in the Lab. canteen?
Bazile, it isn't enough to know what irony is, you have to be able to recognise it when you see or hear it unless it is too tiny.
