Not too difficult with a little twist towards the end - quite enjoyable. However yet again 2 entry lengths are incorrect!

For a different challenge why not take a look at the first Azed Puzzle of the new Competition Year:

Just searching through the paper for this week's EV to no avail. Have they hidden it or is our Life section deficient?

Stuck on this with one clue I can't get, a seeming clash that I suppose relates to the "twist" and absolutely no idea how "swimming aid" affects each entry! And so much Olympics to watch rather than thinking about the puzzle. So it goes.
Thank you, dr b, you are a gem.
Good evening all. Tore through this, noticing incorrect entry lengths, then ground to a halt with two clues to go, which is my current position and has been for some time. Perhaps this is the 'little twist' Twit-Who mentions. I will reconsider tomorrow.

I also found that the particular version of 27d used does not appear in my BRB (10th edition)

You are right, Christiana, the 27d clue is not quite right. The actual word is in the 12th edition as a plural of a similar word so the definition in the clue should be plural. There is a Shakespearian word that might work but puts out the order of the letters required as per the clue.
I am stuck on 29a and 32a, maybe same two as christiana and no idea what you do with the T/R in answers, any hints please
Yes, same two, mad max. Now have 29a but not sure I've entered it correctly, though I'm hopeful -just seems a bit woolly. Don't have any ideas for 32a. Will leave someone else to deal with your other query as I am not certain I have the right idea for this.
Mad max - 29a is within the clue! I'm stuck on 20d and 32ac.
20d bis(tr)es, 29a fenestra? but the T/R is in wrong place? as for 32a still no idea
Question Author
These clues are all linked to the twist. Ideally you need to figure out how and why the swimming aid affects the other answers and how to enter them and then resolve the problem with the last clues. I think the key lies with 22d which nobody has mentioned as having a problem with for some reason.
I am also in the dark like most of the above. I have no idea about the swimming aid and what I mustdo with the T/R. I thought of leaving them all blanks because of TRout but what has this to do with swimming aid?
I am more confused with some of the comments above and wish someone could give me a more suitable clue. I think i might have completed the grid answers except why 29a and 32a change is a mystery. Are there more than three TR's in 22d ? Can anyone tell me how many non words are left im the final solution?
Thanks Twit-Who, getting nowhere, will have one last look tomorrow
Question Author
The correct answer to 22d has 7 letters and the actual entry 6 letters.
I'm pleased to see I am not alone in my confusion over the Swimming Aid.

Surely the setter is not suggesting that TR(out) & F(in) meets the criteria?
I think he is, k, believe it or not. So 29ac becomes FENESFA, and 32ac FENDED from TRENDED (wound). And I suppose 12ac does become FISH. If I sent it in I would replace all the TRs with Fs.

You have to laugh!
many thanks to you all, although a little underwhelmed
Had come to the same conclusion earlier today, and thus solved 32a, but not impressed.
I don't see what else can be done with the endgame (surely the 3 clashes suggest nothing else), but all to end up with a grid full of non-words? What's the point? A fine technical workout solving the clues, but not much else.
Question Author
I have not used the TRout solution which I believe to be incorrect.
