Pride comes before a fall.
I identified the work in the preamble, filled in the answers to clued lights and to all the unclued lights until I came to 38A. I have a word with an anagram which is sensible but not the word in my version of the work nor a synonym of it. Any HINTS, please?

Yes it is the odd one out of the 5.

After googling I did note that, although not in the original work, some quote the alternative word (38a anagram)

@ kayakamina: I know you're marvellous.............so could you please explain my last one,39a, without quoting it:the def. is obvious, but could you just give a HINT only on the rest of the play on words? I must be blind (-ed by love,of course)!
