I have to admit that I could not fully explain the 'ig' part.
Peg = spigot
rings regularly = I'm not sure about this.
in place = a place is a spot

Perhaps I can help.
Rings regularly = 2nd and 4th letter of rings =ig
Place = Spot.
Put 'ig' into Spot = Spigot.

Hi baznsaz. 'Regularly' crops up fairly regularly (no pun intended) in the DT as does 'irregularly'. Compilers often compile crosswords for more than one newspaper so maybe today's compiler compiles Mephisto also. Regards.
