Can anyone help with: Local girl once started showing a horse
I can't give you the number of letters, though it may be six or the letters as it's a crossword with no bars!

Hi Ripper

Morgan. When I did this, this was one that fell out from the cross-checked letters of other answers. i haven't checked up but guessing that morgan was an old name for a 'local girl'. It's certainly defined as a "breed of light horse originating in Vermont"

Thanks Gregsdad
I too thought of morgan, so I'll keep plodding on
Thanks again
Happy to help. Yes, this one's definitelya 'plodder' but enjoyable enough if you persist
mor is a dialect word for girl (see mauther)
gan is an obsolete form of began (started)

Thanks everyone, BUT................ now I've got a problem: I've got the grid filled in with (I hope ) the unclued entries. Now I'm looking for the unchecked letters that form part of a set, any hints as to what/where these are would be great!
Thanks in advance
Hi Ripper
In your grid you should have 4 down unclued areas where the letters are only provided by your across answers. These are the words you need for the signal re the theme. If I'm right the third word of this stretches over more than one unclued down entry - with a shorter word to follow as the 4th of the 5 words. Hope this makes sense.
I've done everything back to front again. I've solved the theme bits whilst being stuck on some of he down clues in the bottom left corner. I need the one on the extreme left and the one closest to the centre line so any help would be appreciated.

Tehees is 'see' (escort) and 'het' (straight) back to front
Bubkes is a Yiddish word meaning a small amount - originally meant 'beans'.
Thanks Jurczy. Those words fitted in with my across answers so am now sorted - I think.

Hi Indy-trier
Sorry I didn't get back earlier with 'tehees' but my computer 'died' (not sure of the technical word for that!)
I'm still plodding on and hopefully the penny will drop soon!
The answer is MORGAN. I don't know how it is worked out!
