well, I have highlighted the (shortened) names of four characters but all I get is a sort of back to front number seven. What am i missing?

I think you've maybe got one of the characters wrong.I don't have the paper, so it's hard to give you all the details. If you have one character's name starting in the top row, you're definitely wrong! You should end up, after shading, with an A - more curved than this one.

2 characters vertical-1 horizontal and 1 a bit of both

I had missed 'baracus', partly because I thought it was just 'BA' on the horizontal, and partly because I had one of the across answers wrong.
