Yes, 38D is indeed one of the neatest clues I've ever come across. Such a clue is only possible in English, of course. I often try my hand at German cryptics, but in German such subtleties rarely work. As for 41A I guessed the answer long before I twigged how it worked. I was looking for a synonym for 'needs' without an 'N', but then the penny dropped. Beautiful! Thanks, Mr Magoo.
