With seemingly no-one yet posting I thought I would have some fun as I have not started a thread before.

Some clues a lot trickier than recent weeks given the varying clue options etc., I'm only about half way through but think I have the game now but a long way to go before I can calculate a score .. time for bed.

TheBear69: for 34a, Chambers says "(also adj)" immediately after the nounal definition, which justifies the clue's wording.

Excellent puzzle this, but am clawing my hair out in the final step, not least because am unsure as to which are the final 8... do they all have to connect? Have copied out the grid fresh without bars, Googled away, to no avail. Any non-game-giving-away suggestions gratefully appreciated. Liked 14a a lot, but I agree with an earlier comment about a few unintelligible surface readings. Many thanks nonetheless, Mohawk.

I found the best solution, for confirmation, was to list the types of clue (extra letter, missing letter, normal with thematic material) and the eight that were left were the eight where the alterations had to be made.

The final step came to me in the middle of the night. Wonderful! There is a huge aesthetic appeal to a crossword like this. Considering the structural constraints it is astonishing how it all comes together. Its appeal extends beyond that of a mere puzzle and has more in common with a fugue or a complex architectural construction. Thank you Mohawk.
Thank goodness there has been no blatant revelation of answers on Crosswordsolver since my complaint 2 weeks ago. We owe them thanks for exercising restraint. Long may it continue.

Really enjoyed this one. I have heard of the game and once I had solved most of the grid, it all began to come together, with the final brilliant PDM occurring as I was falling asleep. Then had to restrain myself until this morning as OH complains I spend too much time on 'my puzzles'! What a clever construction; many thanks to Contendo.

My crossword club subscription has expired and I cannot find a way to renew. Does anyone know if I have to subscribe to the full digital edition of the Times in order to access the crosswords? I do not wish to do this as we share the paper version in our house.

I quite like the feature of this crossword that every clue is used in a different way exactly once (with only a single exception). Which is very aesthetically pleasing.

Thank you Anapice - I see I am not alone.
I telephoned the helpline and have been informed that the"crossword club" can only now be accessed through a full subscription to the Times.
However, I have just emailed them and hopefully will get a better response.

oli- I think there's sort of a technical "one exception", as one word is affected by two arguably separate alterations. But it's more pedantic quibbling than detracting from the puzzle as a whole.

A day of puzzling in the warm (whilst looking at the very picturesque snow outside) & a final resolution just in time for a quiet glass of Burgundy by the logburner.

A thoroughly excellent puzzle - the odd quibbles about clues disappeared as the theme emerged and a protracted (but satisfying) process of nailing down the thematic pairs followed.

At least a couple of the pairs were new to me (and I thought I knew this subject fairly well ...ahem) and the final alteration was hand-clappingly neat and clear.

Just my kind of Listener - enough relatively straightforward clues to get started, enough hard ones to get one's teeth into and raise the odd groan / chuckle, a splendidly eccentric theme and a lovely PDM to make the end game work. However, did myself absolutely no favours by not reading the rubric right to the end and totally missing the bit about the pairings being in Brewers! Thanks Mohawk.

I took my time over this one, but found it relatively straightforward. It seems to me that I have visited this page in Brewers before. The penny dropped yesterday after re-reading the instructions. I am still fretting over the five letter word from last week. After finally getting access to a more recent Brewer's today, I realised that it only contained what I already know. Any hints Perseverer?

......which is more than I can say for my entry to last weeks, where I have to thank Cruncher (above) for allowing me to see the correct answer. As normal for the Listener, it's so clear once you see it, isn't it? I think it was TheBear69 who pointed out that lots of people could be wrong last week - I will add myself to that list!

Just managed to finish this. Many thanks to Mohawk for an entertaining puzzle. I don't have a copy of Brewers but managed to find the thematic pairs anyway.

As it's now Thursday can someone put me out of my misery and let me know what the correct five letter word was last week - [email protected].
