9a Did one have to be blind to associate Man mounting toward a dominating position? (10)

A?C?N?A?C?

It can only be Ascendance or Ascendancy, but I don't want to have to plump for one or the other. Any thoughts?

The TLS often has clues like this. You would think that the setter and crossword editor would learn. But no!
Yes, when there are alternative spellings such as Konstance and Constance, you have to guess which one. Only rarely does the wordplay indicate one answer only. Oh, well.
9A Mathilde Blind (1841-1896) wrote THE ASCENT OF MAN. I guess that ASCENDANCY is the likelier form but am not sure.

I'd go for ASCENDANCY based on what the article says.
I put in ascendancy and got one wrong so it looks like it is ascendance.
