I know what it COULD be - LOL
Question Author
Unlikely!

Could be FACT, perhaps?
Yes it could er face as in an unknown face in the crowd as a helper?
What are the clues that give you the F & C Arran?
Question Author
The 'F' comes from:
1A Pay for one a ... (8) FOOTBALL
(leading to 5A ... play ... (4) GAME)
and in turn:
8A ... study cast ruin (8) CONFOUND
whence cometh the 'C'.
I struggle to fit face or fact, but prefer the former, perhaps as in "She lied, but her face never betrayed her".
could be accessory after the FACT. someone who gives comfort or assistance to felon.
Question Author
I'm now less sure about 'CONFOUND' - although it fits 'study' 'cast' it doesn't really mean 'ruin'. So maybe the 'C' is wrong after all.
Question Author
A little bird (not a canary!) suggests that the reference is to Ben Johnson - the characters Subtle and Face.

Thanks for all the assistance.
I didn't understand where the Football answer came from, but FACE seems okay
