12. Money handed over in Paris for an Australian jumper (4)
The answer was EURO.
I see that money handedover in Paris would be in Euro notes and coins but the rest I'm fairly clueless over. An Australian jumper could be a roo, fairly obviously short for kangeroo, but I don't see how that shortens to ro, or where eu comes from.
Australian jumper = kangaroo The Euro is a species of kangaroo . You would hand over Euros in Paris . Euro, a large, variable species of kangaroo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_%28disambiguation%29
Thank you to mamyalyne and shoota. I accept that maybe the French pronounce Euro as Ooro, but I still don't see where the 1st O would come from , or indeed why this would be a "sounds like" clue.
I like Shaneystar's answer best and have checked out the URL he provided and some other sites. The Euro is indeed a species of kangeroo.
