I now know what the 'in common' (mentioned in the preamble) is, but am nowhere near finished. Can I just ask if all the words that finally appear in the grid are real words? Thanks.
Boreas, well done! I now have only 42 A, 9 D and 36 D left to get/finish off. Any little tips - not answers - would be great. (I'm struggling to find the last themed person/s).
Phew! I now just need 9D - I worked my way through the dictionary for 36 D, which then leaf to 42 A. I'm assuming 9 D is the last themed answer, though I'll have to count the ones I have.
42a is a word with 2 meanings - Hotel, and Governor.
9d is one of the theme names ( a person who has written several books on English usage).
36d is a word I'd never heard of. One meaning is a rectangular piece of cloth worn as a garment, the other is a frame for drying cheese?
Is that enough, or shall I go a bit further?
Thanks, boreas - I mentioned that I had managed to get 42 and 36, but thanks for the nudge re 9 D. I think I'm all done now. I appreciate the help I've had.
If you look up the meaning of what the ten have in common in a previous edition of Chambers - first appendix - it means the same as the second definition of ply in Chambers.
