Possible Crossword Error??

Can anyone make sense of a couple of clues in the Sunday People £50 crossword?
Many thanks for any help on this....got all of it solved except for two mixed up clues in the £50 People Crossword.

11A Put one's name down.......I have got _N_I_T_ _
All I can think of is ENLISTED or ENLISTER

6D Flight of steps _ _ A _ D _
I would have thought it would be STAIRS, but it's the D in ENLISTED which has baffled me.
So, I've decided to fill it in as ENLISTER and STAIRS, but I'm somewhat dubious about it. I think they may have made a mistake on this!!!

Series seems quite likely. In maths a sequence and a series are not the same thing, but I think in other senses they are synomymous
