Am three-quarters done and think I have the theme, but this clue has been bothering me all day.
28 D. Wild cat (tail docked) in region around Athens (6) a?a???

The preamble says there are 'single letter definition misprints in some clues'. I don't know if this one is involved.
Thanks for any help/advice.

Thanks, kettledrum - I'll need to see if the second 'a' that I have is wrong. (It comes from 'atop a pulpit at first' - I had ??b?, so came up with 'ambo'.)
misprint in def. gives STOP = tub (pulpit) + a
I'm glad Dr B has sorted it for you.

Hi Naomi. Have you got the 11-letter phrase? If you understand the connection of the first word to the unclued downs, type the other word (in the singular) into google & I expect all will become clear!
