spar - raps back
1 A. I saw this answered elsewhere as Passus -it's pass/able to be on a jury+ US/ a Latin term 'as above', in an earlier passage for example. Chambers give 'passus' as 'a canto or fit'.
Agree, neveracrossword - definitely "passus"
Spat - taps back
4d spaz - see Chambers.

Thank you - but couldn't 4D be "spat" = taps backwards?
Hi, AMP, you need to check "spaz" (zaps reversed) in Chambers. It means to lose control, urban slang, possibly derived from "spastic"
I can't see how 'spat' would work with 'lose control', though I know the 'strikes set up'/taps bit would be fine.
Question Author
Spaz it is. A new word for me to forget. Many thanks, all.
