infer. (not sure it's an exact synonym though)
infer and imply are not synonymous, as factor says. They are antonyms.

I don't know the answer though
I'm not sure whether I'd say they were antonyms but they are different- I always think of implying as something the speaker/writer does and inferring as something the reader/listener does
Just found this - if it helps - or perhaps confuses

Main Entry: hint
Part of Speech: verb
Definition: suggest; indicate
Synonyms: acquaint, adumbrate, advise, allude to, angle, apprise, bring up, broach, coax, connote, cue, drop, expose, fish*, foreshadow, give an inkling, impart, imply, infer, inform,
I'd be happy with 'infer'.

infer [ɪnˈfɜː]
vb -fers, -ferring, -ferred (when tr, may take a clause as object)
1. to conclude (a state of affairs, supposition, etc.) by reasoning from evidence; deduce

2. (tr) to have or lead to as a necessary or logical consequence; indicate

3. (tr) to hint or imply
No, no, no, no, no!
No, no, no, no, no, yes.
Are you implying that I'm wrong, shoota?
Who are we all no, no, no, yes-ing at?
..........................because that is my inference!
Are you inferring that he's hinting that you're wrong, Tilly?
Ah- too late
Who me?
Would I dare?
Yes!
You imply, I infer. They are totally different. Or I imply, you infer, if you prefer.
Regardless of the correctness or otherwise, Infer and Imply are frequently regarded as synonymous by crossword compilers.
Perhaps I should clarify before I get my ankles bit:
I'm not saying you are wrong for I know you are right but I am saying that 'infer' is the answer and therefore right, not wrong.
Lend and borrow are often regarded as synonymous by pupils
...........in Stoke, it's teach and learn.
