Seems to me there are TWO "alternative titles" : the one spelled out by the corrections (7 letters), and the old title, slightly corrected (5 letters). Is it better to mention both?!

Did this issue's crossword for the first time. Not easy is it? It's scatology makes Cyclops in Private Eye tame in comparison.

maurice, I haven't got the right seven letter misprint word yet, but I agree with you that the title is a misprint of an alternative.

Thank you for the confirmation, whatsthat! To be on the safe side I added the 5-letter one in brackets, but I suppose that was just an extra kick!

I've just realized the first correcting letter corrects a wrong one in the title, not in 1a, so it's not actually part of a definition in the usual sense --- or am I overlooking something else?

Evidently not (said he, answering his own q as usual)! Using "definition" to include the title seems a pretty mean trick to me (even if it's happened before)..........................
