The protester jailed for disrupting the 2012 Oxford-Cambridge boat race has been ordered to leave the UK.

Trenton Oldfield, 37, has been told by the Home Office his presence in the country would not be "conducive to the public good", reports the Guardian.

I'm sure there are many cases more deserving of the full weight of Theresa's department on the books. Of course they might kick up a bit of a fuss in the middle of the road, knowing as they do that they are untouchable.

The Boat Race (and rowing in general) is not the preserve of "toffs" douglas. I and many of my friends rowed in our younger days, I know plenty of youngsters who do now and none of us is a "toff".

However, back to the ridiculous Mr Oldfield (who more meets the definition of "toff" than many of those whose enjoyment he spoiled). What he did was stupid, dangerous and his six month sentence was about right. But even I (a fully paid up member of the "hang 'em and flog 'em brigade) think ordering his deportation is excessive and disproportionate.

I'd far rather the government turned its attentions to the many, many loathesome individuals whose presence here really is "not conducive to the public good".

It's what Australia does. My sister-in-law, engaged to an Australian, was deported because she was jaywalking and argued with the policeman ! She was later allowed back in when married to him though.

How many schools here offer rowing? Methinks those that do are private schools. How is 'toff' defined? If it includes the wealthy middle class, which now provides the intake for Radley and the like, then rowing is for toffs. A visit to Henley Regatta doesn't suggest otherwise and nor, specifically to this case, does a look at the composition of Boat Race crews. When we needed rowers to train with a view to making them potential Olympic rowers, the rowing authorities had to advertise for athletic volunteers of the right height; that suggests that there is not a mass of ordinary people rowing. The ones they got had never rowed.

Everyone should abide by our laws......so we pick on an Ozzie who staged a protest. How about the other protesters, ie. Qatada who often stages protests against Brits who feed him, I believe he's still slumming it in his rent free £1m 5 bed pad
