a tee is what the ball is placed on at the start of a golf hole and, because the ball is raised, the golfer gets a greater distance on the drive than if the ball was simply on the ground

Okay I see all that but it seems to have something missing for a cryptic unless it's playing on the possible misinterpretation of standard and drives. But I bow to the specialists who have more experience than I do with crosswords.
