I'm nearly all filled in and have the six affected answers that are unclued. But I've no idea as to the identity of the quintet members (although I've got a dog!) Any hints would be appreciated.
Also 17 across is baffling me: Tyranny, without appropriate technology, in control (8) _O_ _ N_ON (I'm reasonably sure that the second letter of the definition is removed)
Thanks in advance

Think of a longer word for 'tyranny', - then remove two letters (Appropriate Technology). You'll be left with a word for 'control'.
Hi Ripper.
17a A 10 letter word for tyranny minus AT
If you have the two words in the top row - try Googling them with "dog"
The quintet...
C... B...
G... L...
F... C...
C... C... (the second C in these is the one that does double duty)
Can't remember the last one, sorry!

Thank you both, that'll give me something to go at!
Although G and L are often used together, in this case they are individual members of the quintet. G is one, and L is one.
Ripper, sorry if I confused things for you.
Boreas, thanks for that - I was doing it all from memory, so mucked up the quintet slightly.

I've now filled in the grid, got the affected answers and got all the answers that make up the quintet, plus the 'extra' letters and the word from that. BUT, I still don't 'get' the quintet or is it just five names of r_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ s?
Sorry to be so thick!
Yes, they all fetch things back.
