Genuine 'undiscovered' Talent?

I have friends (as I'm sure you do) who are incredibly talented. Some are singers, some musicians, some actors or film makers. They deserve to be earning a living from their talent, yet this doesn't seem to have happened. I guess they haven't had their 'break'. I think there should be a TV show called "Bedroom Genius" (!) where people who create stuff in their rooms, but who have no idea how to get it out there, or have not been successful, can be featured on the show. Rather like X Factor but not just singers. X Factor for composers etc. I've noticed that very creative people are only capable of creating things and find it very hard to promote themselves or do the admin necessary. Even the Beatles were nothing until Brian Epstein took them in hand!
Yet the pushy loud untalented show-offy types so often achieve stuff just because they have that 'me me me' drive. What can be done to help the bedroom geniuses?!

They can YouTube their talents and tell everyone they know to view it world of mouth should do the rest. If they genuinely are that good- it'll happen for them.

HAHA yes! Bedroom Genius would certainly ensure that people switched on their tellys for it!! No, sadly YouTube is FULL to the brim of everybody's every thought and move. It is so massive that it is impossible to sift through and find stuff which is good. Word of mouth only really happens now with very cute 5 year olds singing like adults...

Don't people need to be exceptionally talented, or exceptionally well promoted, to succeed? I'm thinking of the talent shows we see on TV now. I'm no judge but, to me, lots of the entrants seem very good. They've had an opportunity to 'showcase' what they've got but most almost immediately fade back into obscurity.

Trouble is everyone with a talent feels the need to earn off it. There's only so many places in the limelight.

Can't he/she just enjoy what they do and be happy they've got to a good level of singing/playing an instrument. Everyone wants to be a star.

You may find that some of your friends took up an instrument precisely because they were introverted and needed something to fill up the time they were spending on their own. Or they wanted more friends but had decided for themselves - or, in some cases, been told directly to their face - that they were 'boring' and they thought being in a band would help make people like them. In later life, they might even admit to being too shy to perform in public, much like some people have a fear of public speaking.

Some just play an instrument for the sheer joy of it - their equivalent of a computer game or other absorbing hobby. They could be very secure in themselves and have no desire for fame or fortune.

Personally, I think it's a shame that so many able musicians aren't getting themselves seen and heard because there are so many small towns where people are 60+ miles away from the venue their favourite band is playing at and the petrol from one trip means they can't afford the ticket price on another band.

Gentle coaxing of your friend to the nearest available open mic night would help but don't attempt this unless you're prepared to turn up on the night yourself and bring other friends with you.
