Well it looks like they have been rummaging arouns in the bottom of the ideas bag this week, as the final 5 will have to make a loaf from non-traditional flours.

This could mean spelt, rye, potato or tapioca flours, has anyone used anything like this?

Also the technical challenge is a gluten free recipe and the showstopper must is a novelty vegetable cake that must be dairy free!!

Made a spelt loaf once. Wasn't overly impressed. Seemed the sort of rough stuff ancient civilizations would have to put up with.

I think that is why it is called Grandad grains ie harking back to "olden times"

Plus I do feel they seem to be trying to spread the net with the gluten free and dairy free options.
hmmmmmmmm undecided on dairy free
If I can get my dairy and gluten free, that's a saving for me.

lol OG :-)
You're kidding right... last week I made a cake using 28g of flour. This week I made the same cake using 280g and debated whether I needed to get my eyes checked... I think it's going to be a long time before I get to play with fancy flour!
I am guessing that the beeb have had representation from people with allergies and sensitivities who feel excluded. I can understand it a bit.
I've used spelt to make bread but only 50/50

I'm not sure it's that - I think it's just more of a challenge because of the odd techniques required.

i am so fed up with all of them apart from the black woman. they all seem a bit rubbish - that woman with wonky teeth is just gimmicky, the older lady and the welsh one are just crap, and the young girl makes me want to reach intot he screen to throttle her

That's not very fair :(

I think Kim is a bit too solid to make it through to the end - they need a bit of drama...
Did you get to see Next Great Baker, by the guy from Carlo's Bakery who does Cake Boss? They are ruthless! Makes this lot look like a WI Bake Sale.

I was interested to see the gluten free having had to go gluten free a few times. I tended up give up on bread as it just wasn't good, the shop bought stuff anyway and very expensive for not very much.

I love the look at the cake they are making now, looks very pretty!

Seriously?
What is a 3D cake? Aren't all cakes 3D? Even the flattest of pancakes is 3D!
I agree entirely with bednobs re the remain contestants - come on Kim!
