are spoonerisms involved? 'side wind' is "wide sinned" spoonerised
Question Author
No spoonerisms that I have seen. Re side wind, I can see the blow (wind) not confronted (side, not front) in the 2nd part of the clue, but can't see how this fits with the first phrase. Can anyone else see the rationale?

I would go with the spoonerism. False delivery = wide (cricket). Went astray = sinned therefore wide sinned which becomes side wind. I think Bibble was correct.

Makes sense Danny. Thanks
There is another spoonerism at 23, 28 a. Said dirt -> dead cert
There is another spoonerism at 25 and 26 down, so at last I can make sense of the answer!
