I've really enjoyed this one, but I need a couple of explanations of clues.
19 across Army on foot in former prises according to Jock (4) corrected letter=E . Taft should be the answer from wordplay, but I don't understand the definition.
4 down: Check up French gentlemen within litter (?lifter) (6) wordplay gives Limmer, but I don't (again) understand the definition.
Can anyone enlighten me please!
