Sorry my heading got confused!

I've got nearly all the grid filled in, with some 'clashes'. Odd animals seem to be appearing, but now I'm completely stuck!
What I need is the quotation, but I've no idea where to look for it! I sort of assumed that the title was an anagram (struggle)
Please could some kind person give me a shove in the right direction?
Thanks in advance

the nominal changes will give you the quotation's author pen name instead of his real name.

I've now accumulated a veritable 'zoo' of animals, but I'm none the wiser!
I assume I have to change the animals to other things, but unless I know what to change them to, I don't know the nominal changes, so I can't get the pseudonym or quotation!
I think I'm making this more difficult than it is!
Also, in the end are we left with 'real' words?
I'm just stuck!
Think it's to do with hierarchies in a famous political work of the 1940s

Thank you Kobnut & Gregsdad.
I'm reasonable sure about the book & possibly the quotation, but I need to know if my final grid should be filled with 'real' words?
This is driving me potty, but I'm determined to solve it!
Thanks again
Ripper

Am still working on it but doesn't look like it to me. Certainly not 1A anyway. I think the 'characters' tp be chnaged are there and at 32A 39A and 14D. I have the eight-letter group but not the thematic character as yet.
Question Author
Thanks Gregsdad
Yes I have the same grid numbers as you and the animals - but have no idea what to change them to!
Well done for finding the eight letter group - I haven't!
I've an idea what the thematic character might be, but until I know what to change the 'beasties' to I can't confirm I'm correct!
What a way to spend a rainy, Sunday afternoon!!!
I have dog, cat, cow, hen(s) and possibly, mule....haven't had time to really think it through yet...saomething to do with the 'pecking order'in AF.
There are 5 creatures to be altered, and the forms they take are of a particular type (the thematic character being one of this type).
I have finished the grid. I have written the name of an eight letter character under the grid and those letters enable me to enter five animals of a similar type in the grid - creating non-words.

But, could anyone give me a hint please to suggest what the quotation is? I know the work in question quite well but cannot work out what the quote might be for the life of me!

Glad it's not just me who is finding this difficult.
I think that the quotation may be "a a a e b s a a m e t o"
Gosh - this has got my "little grey cells" working (overtime!)
Can some kind person give me a hint to the 'group of eight cells' please?
Hi Ripper,
The group of 8 cells represents something that Boxer had to contend with whilst alive. It appears in graphical as well as literal form.
Hi Ripper, as Christamacm says it's depicted figuratively in the middle of the grid
I've been told there's an animal in 20 down, but can't see one.
Any help?
I'm in the same boat, Ripper! I've got the animals, the eight cells, the nominal changes (very nice) and a fair idea of the quote, I just can't see what I'm supposed to change the animals to.
If you're still struggling with the 8 cells, the title is both a cryptic clue and a very literal instruction. Start with the last letter of 28A.
Boreas, it's raven
Question Author
Thank you all, I'm still struggling, but I'm determined!
I'm also stuck with 20 down: Deeply impressed yet embracing no good artist (7) _NG_U_T and now that Gregsdad has thrown in a raven, I'm really confused!!!
Hi Boreas..
Yet=EVEN around N(o)G(ood) RA(artist to give a word meaning deeply impressed. You will then have to make a substitution.
I think - engraven - even around ng ra. Then you replace raven with a word for small pig.
..or Hi Ripper even :)

Thanks all, I'm begining to think this is going to beat me!
