Can some football fan(-atic) help me out with32d? Have ?EH?A , which I suppose is possible.
Can't see how 6a fits with the others, either (or does "regularly" mean odd/even letters?)
And another point: are we supposed to cram all those letters into each cell? Talk about overcrowded prisons! Or perhaps the corresponding originals? We're not all classicists..........................
Help, please. 3D has the correct number of letters for entry as does 12A, which seemed straightforward; yet there is a problem with the intersecting letter - which I assumed was to be a problem only when one of the words had fewer spaces for entry than the answer length. A similar quandary arises with 30D and 42A. Yet there are six other clues whose answer length does not correspond to the entry length. Am I missing something?
I am almost certain what I have to enter in the unchecked cell of 26A, which I have not solved (I have everything else), but since this cell does not intersect with a down answer, there is no clash to resolve. Any ideas?
mathsman: If there are A letters and D letters in across and down answers which clash, then you have to resolve (A + D), where 2
mathsman: Sorry: AB keeps mangling my text. If there are A letters and D letters in across and down answers which clash, then you have to resolve (A + D), where (A + D) is a number between 2 and 6.
mathsman - you've probably sussed it by now but just in case... e.g. if a clue indicates 6 letters but there are only 4 spaces in the grid then that means that 3 letters of that answer must be combined with the equivalent letters from an intersecting answer to give just one of the thematic 18, and I would assume that you must write that one thematic 18 in the intersection space in the grid (but since I don't send it in someone would need to confirm that).
mathsman, the two clashing cells you refer to contain just 2 letters each, one contributed from each answer. These each resolve to a two-letter word/18 down. Clashes involving answers too long for their lights resolve to longer words, up to six letters.
