Why Affected?

We've finished the xw but neither we nor our excellent parents nor 15x15 nor this website understand the wordplay in 17A which has been answered elsewhere.

17A One managed to strike base camp (8) ?F?E?T?D which everyone agrees is AFFECTED = camp, but nobody has mentioned the wordplay.

Strike base, ie remove E (base in Logarithms)

A FFECTED

I dithered with this too bdavies . I've put effected simply because effete means camp in some dictionary definitions .So we have effete but what cd has to do with it is beyond me .I can't see the wordplay for affected either .

Oh well done you two ...Logarithms are something that confused me at school and obviously continue to confuse me :)
