For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The complete source material is freely available online; if you type in the title on Google it came up as the third link down for me. Failing that, a map of the relevant area (also easily available through Google) is useful -- and probably quicker than reading through the whole source to confirm the places visited, although again it's well worth a complete read.
Stopped this one when guessed at theme. Not familiar with it, but just enough clues to suss it provided, if in same situation as me. Then restarted once source devoured. Now finished. Superb puzzle. Great theme. Looking forward to maths/logic challenge next week. Given up on magpie ones this month, just not gelling.
Finished. Agree that it's a superbly constructed pleasing puzzle. Where it sits in the rankings depends on one's own personal criteria. Some may prefer a puzzle that one has to worry away at for ages rather than solve in a single sitting, as many have probably done. Doubtless, though, there are some Answerbankers who solve all puzzles in a single sitting (depending on how long a sitting might be, of course). No numericals for us, so signing off for a couple of weeks.
Thanks Hedge-sparrow!
This, to me at least, is exactly what a Listener Crossword should be: multi-layered and educational with some very nice clues. I didn’t get the theme until very near the end which, again, is a sign of a good puzzle. I was aware of the theme but haven’t seen the original. I really must go and look it up.

Pretty much my favourite kind of Listener - just the sort I would choose to describe to friends (if, of course, any of them were interested!). Thanks Hedge-sparrow. I did think the description of how the tour route is represented was a bit misleading, though - I spent a lot of time looking for things that aren't there!
