Hi Sam, saw that one too but the S as the last letter is def correct as the downward clue is an anagram. Perhaps the xword setter had made an error.
What was the anagram clue please?

All I can think of is the name of an Irish statesman politician etc to fit those letters,and I am not very well versed on those I'm afraid.Also some Irish term for affection in there somewhere?

(Sean) LEMASS must be the answer. Makes sense of course when you know the answer Lemass sounds like LE MEAS which means respectfully as Gaeilge.
