yes it is brake because 14d is corncrake
Brake (cluster of trees) is better

Nobody seemed to pick up on "middle ear". I think it's the only feasible answer but I can't figure the word play either.

Using the 'search' box would show it's already been answered a few times as Middle Ear
"A" part of the head. "A" is middle letter of ear.
