I dropped my dog off at the vets this morning for a small operation and she will be having a general anaesthetic. The nurse brought out the consent form and proceeded to tell me that a saline drip was optional and would cost £44.00!! Of course i chose this option(after i picked my jaw up off the floor)as it is the safest thing for my dog but shouldn't this have been in with the price which is £100 to start off with? Saline is a pretty standard part of the operation preperation don't you think?!
My vet has started itemising everything that is in treatments. It started when people became allowed to buy prescription medicines from other suppliers. They list the cost of everything down to needles and sutures. If your pet is having a GA then I think that £100 is peanuts actually when you take into account what that means in terms of staffing, and facilities. I guess that they are trying to keep the care affordable for people who can go to 100 quid but can't stretch to 140.
Have to agree with woof, I thought for an Op with GA that was a pretty standard price. I recently paid £80 to have my cat spayed, something I expect they could do with their eyes shut.
Sounds as though we have a vast variation in regional fees.... our cat was at the vets last week.
Check over with an injection to clear up cystitis and a weeks worth of tablets... £110
My neighbour had her cat put down a month ago .... £180.00
its not the bag of saline, although that is expensive because it is sterile and has an expiry date, there is also the needle and cannula and the knowledge of where to stick said needle.
