I thought of muzz but can't parse it.
Mu (character) + ZZ (sleep)? What about when drained?

Zizz and ziz mean sleep - if you 'drain them', take out the middle. you get 'zz'.

Actually, I suppose it has to be 'ziz' only, so that we're left with 'zz' when the word is drained, emptied.
