Old_Geezer - "I don't think it is cowardice so much as a lack of empathy to the creatures they are abusing. There seems to be a belief by some that if we can condone being part of a food chain then that means we can do what we like to other animals and it doesn't matter. The idea of not causing unnecessary suffering, whether wild or food animals, doesn't seem to register. Other folks' minds are difficult to fathom. Trying to make head & tail of one's own is difficult enough."
I'd agree.
The constant argument used by 'country folk' against 'townies' is that country folk view animals dispassionately. They are there for work, food or sport. They may have pets, but will have a very different relationship with them than urban pet-keepers do.
Fox hunters hunt because they enjoy the chase. If they kill a fox, which they see as vermin, so much the better, but more often than not they don't, and it's not a problem.
