i think i read somewhere that the record for completing the times crossword was about two minutes ... it takes me longer than that to read all the clues

All set Margo. I keep meaning to have a stab at the Telegraph. Will buy one later today and see how I get on. Took me ages to understand the compilers mindset in the mail cryptic though. :-)
