According to figures from the Department of Education in Sandwell at primary school level there are 7,533 pupils whose first language is not English, around 30 per cent.
The number of students with English as a first language totals 17,172, around 69 per cent of Sandwell school pupils. Around 5,261 students at secondary school level don’t have English as a first language, 26 per cent, compared to 14,772 who do, around 73 per cent of pupils.
The respective figures for Wolverhampton state that 4,460, or around 25 per cent of primary school pupils' first language is not English, with around 13,222 youngsters in the city who do have English as a first language. At secondary school level there are around 3,170 students for whom English is not their first language, around 21 per cent.
Around 11,889 of Wolverhampton students have English as a first language, almost 79 per cent.
