Well, where are you all? I know that DocHH is busy packing, but I am sure many of you clever-cloggsis will have got it done and dusted and sent off to Chris for hopeful pickings!!
Am half way thro' the clues with a very one-sided look to the grid, some of the un-clued lights seem obvious but don't seem to have any correlation to them, probably me being my usual thick self............! Anyway, a bit of N & C wouldn't go amiss especially with the enigma.

I have a completed grid and have identified all the extra words. The unclued answer at 14 down is key in a way. My only problem is which of two names to enter below the grid because there are two possibilties. I will probably go with the 8 letter one rather than the 10 letter one. Time now for the corkscrew!

Hi deva! Nice to see someone else starting the EV thread for a change.
Completed this earlier today, discovered the same ambiguity as novalis did. Have been assured that both answers will be accepted, but the ten-letter option was only named until much later works so really it's the eight-letter one we should be going for. Found it not too bad and a good excuse to read up about something I probably should have seen already, but haven't yet.

Hello both,
Am not actually packing, but have sorted out what is going in the suitcase. Due to my discipline I am quite organised, so have a list for each type of absence fom home, it does however mean that I forget the same item each time! I used to tell Herself that if she couldn't carry her suitcase she had too much! She bought a suitcase with wheels. Despite that our combined check-in luggage will weigh not more than 24kg.
Populated the grid, with the exception of the unchecked unclued lights, which was a struggle. Then twigged the relevance of what is epitomised by one of the unclued entries and then after a search it all sort of fell into place. Novalis I think you are correct about the 8 letter option, particularly as it would have made more use of it.
Am selling Raffle Tickets in our local shopping centre tomorrow, a win a car competition. The charity selling the tickets, a different charity each day between last saturday and just before Christmas, gets to keep the money from the tickets they sell. It is organised by the local Round Table and worth at least £300.00 to each charity.

Well then! I have managed to populated most of the grid with just some queries about 28a & 30d, am assuming we are looking at archaic for 28a. Can make no sense of the un-clued lights and naturally my letter removal leaves a lot to be desired, nothing seems to marry easily to anything else. As to our heavy hint for 14d Novalis, surely not vroom, vroom?? Altho' EV_solver could just be hinting at that...........?
DocHH, just how do you manage to travel so light? I refuse to do any washing whilst away so we travel with double your suitcases! Where are you going?

Yes, Devadolly - Vroom, vroom. Also, you have inadvertently given yourself an indirect clue as to the theme by asking Doc HH how he can travel so light. 28 across is not really archaic but 30 down is obscure and was a new one on me.
I would have gone for the 8 letter one for the reasons stated by everybody.

Hello all, Have arrived in Isle of Man (with somewhat more luggage than DocHH!) and happily set about this one, whilst my son was out at work today. I sent myself off on a red herring by identifying 14d as a gentlemen who wrote copiously about paradoxes. As he was also a mathematician and logician, I was seriously worried for a while, as you might imagine Devadolly. The Wikipedia article on him was largely unintelligible.
Thank goodness, it was someone else entirely and despite the usual problems with identifying extra words incorrectly I've now staggered to a conclusion. Like you dd, I still don't follow the wordplay for 28a but otherwise 'it's a wrap' as they say.
If you haven't finished yet, dd, I'd certainly back Novalis' advice.

Devadolly,
We are going to the Dominican Republic. When I was working and travelling for work I soon learnt to travel light, to avoid long waits at carousels for luggage. Became able to fit all that was needed for a 2/3 night trip into what is now permitted as hand baggage, including papers for meetings.
So we are off "tomorrow" and "back" on the 26th!

I have stared, stared again, read all your clues (many thanks) until I am blue in the face, and gone backwards and am still unable to connect (all possibly) a dead speed merchant; brown ants drinking tea whilst having an altercation at a 'bit of a do' whilst out of uniform!! Oh, and I forgot something totally incomprehensible at 5a. Something must be wrong somewhere.......but where I ask myself.
Hi Christina, as soon as I posted the last one I realised it was silly cinema and 1d/31a leapt at me. Al tracked down apart from 5a which I have no idea about, I feel that my 7d is wrong because I can't really justify the answer I have, pretty sure of the other downs that cross though.
OoooooooH! Jim 360, send it to the Listener or the Guardian............have pity on we numberphobes!!
