I have finally struggled to a full grid ( though not fully able to parse some of the across clues) but no idea of how to "change a single letter" to reveal the given name of a relevant charcter. Any help please?

If you've filled the grid then most across answers are missing a letter *; ie are non-*. Type * non-* into google (* to be replaced of course); should soon find the name.
The theme became apparent early on with what most of the across answers have in common before entry. There is some excellent clueing and quite a few new words to me but it was very enjoyable.
I am relatively new to EV (last 6 or 7 weeks) but am thoroughly enjoying the challenge. It is almost a joint favourite with speccie! Most "Listeners" are still beyond me but I do have a go when the thread "says" it's an easier than usual one. Looking forward to the numerical L on Fri.

Thank you v much stymied for the help. Now to parse those last few answers......
Glad you areenjoying EVs Roslyn251254. Given your skill with the Speccie I think you will rise to the challenge of these.
Thanks for the hint -- I was also stumped on the endgame, and had assumed it was something to do with US v. UK English.
I suppose the USA answers could be considered as 'non' as explained by stymied, Jim 360. I haven't finished the complete grid yet but suspect I know who we are looking for............ definitely a group that deserves a xword theme of their own, how about it Ruth-robin?
Yes, Devadolly, they would all make a good theme with their chequered careers.
What horrible weather we are having at the moment. I wonder whether the amazing snowfalls in America will turn out to be very heavy rain in Britain causing widespread flooding again. Anyway, I have been indoors for most of this week and completed this EV except for 24 across which i cannot fathom out the connection. Can anybody please help me and put me out of my misery. Thank you in advance.
Hello Shoni. It's the one of the 3 that has to be given the partial treatment as well as changing to 'common' usage.
THank you , I had realised that, but the words that i could possibly fit in are not what I would call common usage words. Perhaps a further explanation and broader hints would help me especially if you could perhaps say whether the first letter of the answer is around the middle of the alphabet. I still do not see the connection with a wedding reception.
Hi Shona!
The last five letters of the original answer refer to a very important person at a wedding reception. The first letter of the changed answer is, indeed, near the middle of the alphabet and a letter needs to be removed from that changed answer before entry. The original answer suggests a place where an artist might work.
Sorry, that should have opened Hi Shoni.
Dear Shoni
The inverted commas indicated the relevant meaning of common, try a vowel.
