I think they should allow either last letter!

If the last letter is not cross checked then I would go for x.

As I have stated elsewhere, both "beau" and "bureau" are taken directly from French, and therefore the more satisfactory plurals end in "X". "Beaus" and "bureaus" look a bit clumsy and have the whiff of an Americanism about them.
