1a (7) I can only get cabbage but can't see where it ties up with the clue.

Well that is the correct way to parse the clue to arrive at the answer Margo. I think that williaj may also not understood what the idiom of cabbage was as well as an edible Brassica. ;_) xx
Retro- I had never heard of cabbage meaning to steal. Thought it was a very odd clue until I read the posts. I left you and Danny a message on that other thread xxx
