Help please - I don't understand the answer.

2d - Spoils exotic allure by beginning to swear (7) - LAURELS - I understand the answer is an anagram of 'allure' and 's' - but what has it to do with the clue?

spoils are winnings, as are laurels.

Umm - yes I see - sort of - not one of their best!

I agree, spoils usually means loot whereas laurel wreaths are what winning athletes get. So a victorious general might get both but they're not really the same thing.
one of the definitions for spoils in Chambers is prizes, therefore acceptable.
