Need Your Help Please Fellow Abers

We need a new tv, Mr F has always made the decision on which one, but as many know, he now has Alzheimers and can't really make an informed decision.
I have tried ploughing through a 'buy a new tv' guide, got so far, and then it all goes over my head.
Based on the room size, we need 38/40" screen.
Also need a Freeview HD tuner.
The guide recommends the top 4 brands to be Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic. (Other than the expensive brands for real boffs) Our viewing consists of Mr F watching his few progs during the day, and viewing his DVD's. He doesn't watch sport at all. Unless you count snooker LOL.
Rare I watch the tv in there as I don't like the same programmes he does.
I have no idea what PVR and OLED is, smart tv? 3D? I don't think we need that.
And there I get stuck..I think we need LED rather than plasma or LCD, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyone with a bit of patience to help me check further, or recommend something, I'd be very appreciative.

A Smart TV means that you can connect the TV itself to the t'interweb via wifi - useful if you want to watch something on BBC iplayer, for example.

PVR is the 21st Century version of a Video Recorder - you have an on-screen guide and they have their own built in tuners so you can record programmes on it and then watch them later.

When I bought last tv Panasonic and samsung were recommended. Friends have a Samsung smart tv which I like but a little complicated. I have found Hughes and Richersound good in giving advice.

This is it Mazie, neither of us watch enough to go in for Sky or Virgin package.

HD ..LCD.. DIGITAL TV....smart tv is ok if you want catch up and internet ..but that is like having a wachine machine with 50 programmes when you only need 3 in my opinion..

many many sets available in the 40 inch range...now relatively inexpensive ..

you may like one with a built in dvd player also in order to save messy cable connections to a separate player... look on amazon or ARGOS catalogue...they will deliver and set up for a small fee...

I don't watch too much either ferlew. I still have one of those old fashion square ones in the room I use... Hopefully someone will come along soon that knows what they are talking about :o)

Right Stephen, we don't need smart then, Mr F doesn't record anything, so we don't need PVR.
Anything I miss I am happy to watch on my Mac on player, 4OD etc.
Feel as if I am getting somewhere now.

We've got a 40" Sony Bravia in our bedroom, nothing to technical and it has Freeview, good quality sound and vision, does everything we want it to.

Dare not change anything much Murraymints, Mr F can cope with DVD player, and VTR player for his older stuff. On videotape.

Maxie, I am happy with my little 18" flat screen Toshiba, with freeview, in my craft room....it's about all I watch.

I wish the TV manufacturers would make a dementia-friendly control unit, just on off, say five channels that you could programme and volume....my mother can not use the LG one we have - nice TV as to pic though.
