p astern
back part of ship = p
astern = back
Past (back) and stern(back part of ship) = pastern (part of horse's leg)

Thanks folks much appreciated.
i could well be wrong danny but wouldn't your parse give paststern?
No I don't think so, the setter has merged the words in order to arrive at the solution.
... but that leaves 'back part of horse' which isn't pastern
I would go for back part of shiP being the P and astern for back, part of horse being pastern.
Thanks Mac. I boobed.
that was my first post :-)
