How annoying! I've been staring at these 2 clues for ages, & as soon as I've posted I think I've got them.

Terrace and purse.

Thanks 1ozzy.
I'm in Oz for a shortish visit, & am not on the same wavelength as some of the SMH setters. I found last Friday's crossword particularly difficult.
I find the Herald more difficult than the Telegraph
The Tele is a bit of a walk in the park.

Hope you enjoy your stay Kettledrum.
Is the Telegraph the same as the British one?
G'day Jack.
No doubt they are all owned by Murdoch. A group called Auspac Media supplies the crosswords to the paper here.
The Tele used to employ a fella called David Stickley to produce a cryptic called "The Stickler" but decided to cut costs. What a shame I used to enjoy his crosswords. He has a website and now produces one a week instead for his loyal fans.
The reason I ask is that what works in one country, even in the English speaking world, does not necessarily work in another. Allusions to things British may not resonate with those in the Antipodes.
Agreed, a friend in the UK used to scan and email me numerous crosswords, could rarely finish them and when I saw the answers, well, that didn't really help.
Another person in Canada supplies a link to an American cryptic, same thing.

One thing I like about the "Stickler" is he supplies a link to selected clue hints and another link specifically for non Aussies, explaining terminology, places etc.
