According to my edition of the Daily Mail (North West Region) the clue for 16a is "Small bird at Church is in pain" my answer is S TIT CH.

A previous question resulted in options of "Girlfriends or "George Best"

It would appear that "PITCHERWITS" IS AN ONLINE CROSSWORD BY THE DAILY MAIL. Since I do not enter ONLINE Crosswords (a bit of a traditionalist ) I was not aware of the DM alternative

Perhaps the original question should have included "PITCHERWIT" in the heading !!!

It did actually say Pitcherwits under the heading Planeman. The puzzle is on the top left hand corner of the paper( same page 38)

I have now found the crossword in question

I think the confusion arose because "redsokk" quoted PRIZE CROSSWORD in their original question heading.

Original question seems to have PITCHERWITS writ large upon it, imho!
