44 across: Doctor forsaking money back gets reputation for goodness (4) H?LO (is it halo and if so why?)
Of the 'single letters ignored in wordplay in eleven clues' I've got 9 of them, but have no idea what they say.
I've also got the 8 unclued answers
Basically can some kind person give me a push in the right direction to finish this?

I didn't get all the single letters, but I don't think they were needed. If you've got all the unclued answers, you're 99% there. The 'appropriately positioned' bit was a great help.

Am I right that the two names (unclued) are characters in a book/film? I think I've paired up the unclued ones, but am none the wiser. I can't find an appropriately positioned 'normal answer' either!
Feel I'm being rather think, so I do need more help!

look at 22d
the character has 4 names but really it's only one
single letters come from 1a,4a,9a,12a,20a,36a,45a and the 2nd word comes from 2d,15d,18d,33d . This will only help though when you know the character and the book he comes from

I've no longer got the paper, so I can't remember the details. The eight unclued answers lead to one single, very relevant word. I don't think the two names are characters in books - one, which is from a book, is the relevant word +Barbara the other, which isn't is, is John + the relevant word.
