I think the other answers are correct: pet hate to annoy animal = bugbear; witticism to point to two animals = epigram; lousy VAT agenda adjusted to some benefit = advantageously; to pay back engineers, one doctor devises ruse = reimbursed; pressure on a deity to get a temple = pagoda. So will have to keep on thinking. Thanks anyway.
