I'm guessing "dates" and the "d" comes from after dinner, but how is the rest parsed?

Becomes stale - dates as in outdated.

Thanks guys - I got the dates as in goes stale, but failed to see where the letters came from after the "d".
I think it's supposed to be a double definition, though as scorps suggests, they wouldn't be a treat at my table!
It's been a long time since I've had a date after dinner.

The letters of 'sate' are in there.
