10 Stoke , kindle/ignite. Bram Stoker wrote Dracula - he's reduced/shortened and becomes Stoke.
"bird" is slang for girl/woman who seeks a kiss (peck) under the mistletoe

Thanks for STOKE, Neveracrossword. I kept meaning to look up who had written the Dracula novels. Thanks, Writesbad. So the answer is not really cryptic, is it? I could see MISTLE as a bird, possibly 'grabbing' ETO; or MISTLE followed by TOE. I was looking to use up all the clue in a cryptic way. It was only asking for non-cryptic general knowledge about the mistletoe custom. Disappointing for a 'toughie'.
I disagree. Plant that a female grabs when wanting a kiss, i.e whichever man's head she holds it over must kiss her. Sounds cryptic enough to me.
19a) Stoke. Author Bram Stoke(r)
