Declaring Sorn

I will not be using my car from 1st sept .However, today, until the evening I will be using it.Can I sorn it that late - a few hours away from 1st sept ?
But when I was online earlier wishing to arrange a sorn a friend warned me that SORN was immediate.

I sorn my bike every winter these days, I believe it starts from the 1st of the month, like the tax does. If your tax has run out today, then you must sorn it and then im afraid, you cant use it. If you dont re tax or sorn it the DVLA computer will come after you!

If you SORN it before midnight you could argue you did it before 1st Sept if they argue the toss.
