For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You can cut the leaves right back to the main stem with a very sharp knife, and also remove the air-roots - it will look a bit tatty to start with, but, being a succulent, will soon sprout new leaves, given a reasonable amount of water (don't drown it!!) - a little bit of baby-bio or diluted nettle juice will help. Worth checking under pot to see if roots are attacking your carpet in their hunt for liquid sustenance; if they are, trim them off and put it in a larger pot. Bear in mind, these are epiphytes which normally grow in the forks of Amazonian trees where there are no pot restrictions, and no shortage of water !
Once it starts to regrow, prune the old leaves again every year - you can also root cut leaves in moist compost to breed yet more potential triffids.
